A Year’s Quest – June

Four tips on how to be a good friend. First, reach out to them on their birthdays. Second, be supportive by showing up for important events. Third, frame grievances in the context of how to improve your friendship. Lastly, make new friends by engaging with people you see on a regular basis.

June: Be a Better Friend

Send Birthday Wishes
Reach out to a friend on their birthday. Text, call, or send an e-card to let them know that you are thinking of them.

Be Supportive
Encourage new endeavors, listen without judging, and show up for important events.

Air Grievances in a Timely Manner
When your friend acts in a troubling way, share how it affects you. The two of you may brainstorm alternate behaviors that may be more constructive.  This is done within the context of improving your relationship.

Make a New Friend

Start a conversation with someone you see on a regular basis. Each subsequent time you see that person, follow-up on your previous conversation. Ask additional questions about them to show interest.

How do you live in the present? Try taking an improv class. You have to listen carefully to what is being said so you can add on. “Yes and” is the proper response to anything. Additional ways to be mindful are suggested in this blog.
